What is it that attracts us to other people? Generally, most of us have specific types of people we are attracted to based largely on what people look like. This is natural with us humans since sight is our primary sensory experience. If the situation is right, we may get to talk to that person, which allows us to “see” something entirely different. Sometimes people we are visually attracted to aren’t as appealing once we hear them speak. I’ve been there more than once.

But what about the attractions which you can’t see or hear? Sometimes we are attracted to others by some unseen connection with no rational explanation, it’s just how it is. Could it be we have loved them in another life? Is it a chemical thing? Are we fulfilling some karmic lesson or is it simply a random attraction? Some things in life simply defy definition.

In my earlier days, I had attractions and some turned into relationships. I have come to the conclusion that the term “opposites attract” is a real phenomenon. My experience with “opposites attract” is that they are usually more intense than attractions to people more like myself. It can be very powerful, and before you know it, you’re involved with someone that is your total opposite. It’s a slippery slope. However, it c
an work if your attraction endures. More often than not, the differences usually win in the end.

What makes us attracted to people who we know aren’t a good fit? Are we in control of our lives or is there really some unseen force at work when it comes to attractions? I think most people have had an unrealistic attraction to someone at one point or another. Are we going there just because want someone in our lives, or is it because we think people can change for love? For some people, I think it is a little bit of both, but for most of us, I think it’s probably more that we think people will change. After all, we have these feelings towards each other, so we have a few differences. Having said that, if the mutual attraction is strong enough, I believe some people do change for other people. For most of us, however, being attracted to your total opposite and believing that they will change probably isn’t the most realistic view to have. I personally think the “unseen connection” theory was at work at that time of my life and made me make an unwise decision.

That’s the power of attractions, we want to go there, but should we? Most times we’re better off reading the writing on the wall, but that would mean using our heads, and attractions come from the heart. Sometimes your heart likes to ride the rollercoaster, even if your head would rather ride the merry-go-round.
